Over the weekend the doubles team of Sam Lauritsen and Adam Konfrst placed third at the State Tennis Tournament. The tournament was held at Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo, Iowa.

Lauritsen and Konfrst were seeded fourth out of the sixteen teams from around the state. In the first round the boys would take on a team from Clear Lake (Peterson/Adams). The Rams won 7-5,6-4 in straight sets to advance them into the quarterfinals.

Glenwood would take on a team from Maharishi (Zhu/Burke) in the quarters. Lauritsen and Konfrst played lights out and defeated Zhu/Burke 6-3,6-4 in straight sets.

The semifinal round started on Saturday. Glenwood matched up against the number one seed from Cedar Rapids Xavier (John Lansing/Charlie Esker). The team of Lansing/Esker defeated Lauritsen/Konfrst in straight sets 6-2,6-0.

“I was impressed by the team out of Xavier. I had a feeling Lansing/Esker would go on to win the tournament and they did 6-4,6-2 over the two seed from Waverly-Shell Rock.”

After the boys lost against C-R Xavier they would face Marek/Thompson from LeMars. Lauritsen and Konfrst played well and won the first set 6-3 over Marek/Thompson. Despite having a 5-2 lead over LeMars in the second set, Marek/Thompson fought back and took the second set 7-6 (4). After splitting the first two sets both teams would get ready for a 10 point super-tiebreaker in the third. The team of Lauristen and Konfrst stepped up and won the third set 10-5 over Marek/Thompson to finish third in the state.

Senior Sam Lauritsen and Junior Adam Konfrst become the first Boys’ Tennis Players from Glenwood to medal at the state tournament. Congratulations Sam and Adam!
