Kevin Tucker's picture

The 2017-18 Glenwood Sports calendar sports season has officially wrapped up. As always I would like to take the time to highlight my top three sports moments from the 2017-18 calendar sports season. As always it can be very difficult to pick out my top three and I’m sure I am probably missing something.

Enjoy!

For the first time in Glenwood’s history the state basketball trophy has found a resting place at Glenwood High School’s trophy case. Glenwood was by far one of the most impressive teams that stepped in Wells Fargo a week ago.The Rams defeated three teams that each had a potential division one player on their team. On their way to the state title Glenwood defeated #5 Norwalk 67-58, #1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 69-63 and #3 Oskaloosa 66-62. Glenwood’s crowd was praised all week long for their following in Des Moines.

#5 Matt Mims. Ram fans remember that name and number. Mims is a 6’ senior guard for Cedar Rapids, Xavier. Matt led Xavier in scoring this season with 21 points per game, rebounds with 143, assists with 119 and steals with 66. Pretty impressive right?! The senior guard dropped a season high thirty-two points in the quarterfinals while knocking down 5-7 three pointers.

Glenwood advanced to the Class 3A State Basketball Semi-Final game Thursday with their 67-58 win over Norwalk. Glenwood’s win did not come easy after being down twenty points in the first half. Freshman Ryan Blum was the player of the game with seventeen points off the bench. Glenwood will play the number one seed in Cedar Rapids, Xavier on Thursday.

For the second time in four years the Glenwood Rams are heading back to the Wells Fargo Arena. Glenwood defeated Harlan 82-69 tonight in the Substate Final.

Harlan started the night out shooting lights out from the floor and took a 11-3 lead over Glenwood with 5:30 to go in the first quarter. Senior Jacob Hansen got the Cyclones off to a great start by hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter. Glenwood would bounce back and took a 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter behind a pair of Christian Stanislav three pointers.

Glenwood vs. Harlan Sub-State Final Preview

What was normally a David (Glenwood) vs. Goliath (Harlan) match-up, tonight the 21-2 Glenwood Rams should be the favorite against the more historic 15-7 Harlan Cyclones. The history in this matchup goes deeper than just on the basketball court. Let’s start with Glenwood Ram head coach Curt Schulte. Schulte grew up in the Harlan area and graduated high school a Cyclone. Now Coach Schulte is a Ram, repping the black and gold. Next, Glenwood’s Activities Director Jeff Bissen. Bissen was a Harlan graduate as well.
